Cherry on top Please! posted: January 30, 2008 at 11:43 am

Well Scott and I was  out and we grabbed a quick bite to eat and there was a new frozen yogurt place that opened up not too long ago call Cherry on top. The decor is something you would see on TV at a swanky place. It is white with very modern decor white chairs and everything looks industrial chic.

It is a self serve place where they weigh your yogurt choices with a plethora of toppings. The yogurt flavors du jour  were peach, mango, cookies and cream, chocolate, cheesecake, blueberry tart, plain tart, coconut, and  kiwi strawberry.

Toppings ranged from granola, fruit, candy pieces and sauces. The arrangement looked very clean and very appetizing.  The only disappointment were the size choices in cups to get your yogurt….there were only two and it was big and very big.

I was a bit full from dinner so I only got a little taste of the cookies and cream, cheesecake, and blueberry tart. Scott got cheesecake, cookies and cream and chocolate and topped it off with butterfinger pieces.

The yogurt in general was very good but I found that blueberry and chocolate was excellent. The blueberry was a little tart but it was very pleasant with a clean finish of blueberry. The chocolate was smooth and not too sweet but a nice taste of chocolate.

I am looking forward to going again to taste some of the other flavors. Cherry on top was a fine finish to the night. Great yogurt but I wish they had smaller cups.

Z Tejas? Z best? No… Z good…. definitely. posted: January 23, 2008 at 11:11 am

Blending bold flavors from Arizona, California, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Texas comes an interesting concept by the name of Z Tejas!  The menu reminds more more of tex mex with some cajun offerings. The menu is very short compared to most restaurants.

The atmosphere was warm and very comfy the only real complaint was the noise. Even with tables being nicely spaced apart noise carried so much it was a bit distracting.

We started off with two appetizers since their appetizers tend to be on the smallish size….. We had chile verde with pork and a smoked chicken quesadilla.

Before the appetizers came out they serve cornbread in a cast iron skillet with whipped butter…. it is a great concept and the cornbread they use is quite good… moist and very flavorful.

The appetizers arrived and the chile verde came with tortillas and black beans topped with cotija cheese. The chile verde was very good. It had just the right amount of tartness from the tomatillos and just enough spicyness to be flavorful and pleasant. The black beans that accompanied the dish were perfect. Very flavorful and cooked perfectly.

The second appetizer didn’t fair too well. The lackluster dish didn’t have enough cheese to be called a quesadilla. There was a pool of liquid from what look like the pico de gallo they topped it with and then fell off. It caused half of the tortilla to be soggy while the top half was crisp. It was more like a soft taco cut how a quesadilla should have been dressed. The flavors were bland and quite disappointing. They also didn’t do a very good job of shredding the chicken because I had a bone in my quesadilla.

As for dinner we decided to each order something and then we would split. I ordered chorizo stuffed pork tenderloin and Scott ordered the Santa Fe smoked chicken enchilada.

The chorizo stuffed pork tenderloin was served with mashed potatoes and sauteed vegetables. The pork was topped with a roasted garlic cream sauce. The dish was excellent. The pork was tender and juicy. The chorizo was a little spicy and was airy almost mousse-like. The vegetables were cooked properly but a little more salt on the vegetables would have balanced the dish out a bit more. The mashed potatoes were very tasty but not smooth. I do not know if this was on purpose to make their mashed potatoes lumpy but it complimented the dish well.

The smoked chicken enchilada was topped with a red chile sauce and was served with black beans and spanish rice. The enchiladas suffered the same fate as the quesadillas. It was quite bland compared to their other offerings. The enchilada was built flat and round instead of the traditional tube shaped we are all so used to seeing. The rice and beans were very flavorful which is sad considering they were sides.

We finished off the meal… (yes we were hungry) with dessert. The server which was very friendly suggested the special which was a red chile fudge pie topped with ice cream and chocolate and caramel sauces. The cake was bland which seems to be a theme for the night but the coffee ice cream they paired with it was great.

All in all… was it bad…no… was it good? Yes… for having such a small menu and to have half of what we ordered to be okay was a bit disappointing but the dishes that were good is stuff where you crave and come back for. All in all it was a good place and hopefully those that read this will avoid the bland items.

Happy eating!

Like a Phoenix from the ashes rises Zankou Chicken posted: January 21, 2008 at 8:16 am

Wow….it has been over 2 years since I have posted and I have completely neglected my blog. But now I have a brand new macbook thanks to my baby and a quick swift jolt from a good friend I am going to continue my blog. So like the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes…. I decided to do a place where the chicken dish is worthy of this momentous occasion…. Well I happened on it because the Polish place I wanted to go to went out of business…. so life doesn’t go as planned so one must improvise. After the little snafu… I happened on Zankou chicken in my GPS.

I hadn’t had that in years and was excited to go back to one of my little places I used to eat at in my heydey of dining out.

Zankou chicken is located on Ball road in Anaheim but they have 6 locations most of them are in LA county. They specialize in Lebanese cuisine. They serve falafel, shawerma, and their very famous and very delicious chicken.

When I walked into the restaurant it is a very very simple place that isn’t much about decor but it is about the food. Plain chairs and booths line one side of the restaurant while the other side is where the magic happens.

We walked up to the counter and ordered more food than we should have but it was well worth the pain later. We ordered one falafel wrap, one tri tip shawerma wrap, one tri tip plate, and 1/2 a chicken with extra garlic sauce.

The wraps came without any sides. The shawerma plate came with sesame sauce, hummus, pickled veggies, onions, diced tomatoes and some pitas. The chicken came with only the chicken, pitas, and garlic sauce.

The wraps were full of not just filler (is what I call the lettuce and the tomatoes) but a lot of the main ingredient. It was overflowing and my partner in crime said this is a good thing when you start eating that you can’t put it down or it will fall all over the place. The falafel wasn’t as good as we had hoped but still a decent showing. The tri tip shawerma wrap was filled with meat and was very good. For under 5.00 for the wrap it was a great deal.

The tri tip shawerma plate was wonderful. It had a side of hummus and their sesame sauce which you can eat as much or as little as you like with the pita. The meat was tender and flavorful.

The rotisserie chicken was the best of the bunch. The skin was crisp while the meat was tender and juicy. Pairing it with the garlic sauce and the warm soft pita…it was heaven in my hand and then in my tummy…. The service was quick and friendly but don’t go trying to sub too much since they aren’t really equipped to do so. If you are looking for atmosphere this isn’t going to be a place to go but if you want just good satisfying food…. I would recommend the rotisserie chicken and the tri tip shawerma. Until then…happy eating…
